Course Description

This online training course will increase your understanding of the management of diabetes in women pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy and during the postnatal period.

Overview
This online training course will increase your understanding of the management of diabetes in women pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy and during the postnatal period.

There are many risks associated with diabetes in pregnancy, to both the mother and the foetus, so it is essential that pregnancies are prepared for and managed safely. These risks can include miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, pre-term labour, congenital malformations and foetal macrosomia. It is essential for those with pre-existing diabetes that they are able to plan and prepare for their pregnancies.

The overall aim of managing a diabetic pregnancy is to ensure the health of both mother and child. This training course will provide healthcare professionals who care for women with diabetes with the knowledge they need to properly care for those who become pregnant, or who wish to become pregnant. This course includes information about blood glucose monitoring and dietary changes, contraception, the risks associated with diabetic pregnancy and what you need to consider.

Pre-pregnancy care includes the steps taken to provide information, advice and support to be able to accomplish optimum blood glucose control prior to conception, to improve general health and to ensure effective care before conception. Upon completion of this module, learners will understand how they may start to develop a health plan for women with diabetes who wish to become pregnant.
